Put me on my death bed right now and I would spend most of my time snivelling and trying to get sympathy. In between, if you were silly enough to ask, I would probably recount my life in journeys. Student debt to solvency, single to happily married, starting points, turning points, aspirations. You know, the big stuff. I might not mention which particular diet fads worked or didn't work. I may not remember that mistake I made at work which was not significant but for which I spent nearly an entire week mentally crippling myself. I would definitely not care whether on Tuesday 24 August 2003, someone had remembered to put the bins out.

And yet on a daily basis approximately 90% of my energy is ploughed into just those issues and the bigger picture is....well, a bit over pixelated.

This is fine, I reason. And perfectly rational. What is important however is not to let stuff I won't remember prevent me from finding the time to create the memories I will cherish.

And so....operation no regrets. Beginning with a travelling adventure. Eleven months, eleven counties, two backpacks, myself, my husband and the odd mosquito along for the ride.

Sweating the Smalls.....Again

Sensibly, we give in a bit today, and take it very easy so I can try and shake the strange ear/stomach combination (probably totally unconnected to each other). Other than walking into town for a healthy lunch we stay in by the fire, and try to nurse my angrily complaining stomach back to health.

So I will take this opportunity to talk about the ongoing journey to attempt to 'not sweat the small stuff'. Because it really does seem to be much harder than it sounds.

It is still perfectly possible, whilst in another country, living in a completely different culture, if when surrounded by others with much bigger issues, to become weighed down by whether the latest blog entry has uploaded, when I will get an opportunity to email home, whether progress on Neville the Novel is fast enough and a hundred other tiny things which take any opportunity to crowd into my mind.

This kind of thing, living life from insignificant moment to insignificant moment, caught up in trivial worries and missing the bigger, brighter things, spending most of your time thinking only of things which you know you will not care about in a few hours, let alone a few days, weeks or months - is exactly what this blog, what this year, is all about.

Don't sweat the small stuff. But we seem to be hard wired to do it. Why is the small stuff just so sweaty?

Perhaps it is simply because life is easier to focus on via the trivialities. Life is big, perhaps we just can't comprehend it without breaking it up into bite sized sections.

The question is though, are these small things making up the bigger, more important issues, building them up bit by bit to guide our attention gently towards them - or are they acting as an inferior decoy?
