Put me on my death bed right now and I would spend most of my time snivelling and trying to get sympathy. In between, if you were silly enough to ask, I would probably recount my life in journeys. Student debt to solvency, single to happily married, starting points, turning points, aspirations. You know, the big stuff. I might not mention which particular diet fads worked or didn't work. I may not remember that mistake I made at work which was not significant but for which I spent nearly an entire week mentally crippling myself. I would definitely not care whether on Tuesday 24 August 2003, someone had remembered to put the bins out.

And yet on a daily basis approximately 90% of my energy is ploughed into just those issues and the bigger picture is....well, a bit over pixelated.

This is fine, I reason. And perfectly rational. What is important however is not to let stuff I won't remember prevent me from finding the time to create the memories I will cherish.

And so....operation no regrets. Beginning with a travelling adventure. Eleven months, eleven counties, two backpacks, myself, my husband and the odd mosquito along for the ride.

Los Ancianos

This a brief entry, because today is a little bit of a missed target. We arrived home at past midnight last night and M's comment that he was 'destroyed' carried through substantiation into the day. I can barely lift myself out of bed, find my eyes closing in class and the grammar involved in making the distinction between placing an adjective before or after a noun makes my head spin. I don't quite manage to say basic phrases such as 'fine thank-you' when people politely enquire as to my health and mistranslate the time for my private class so that I am an hour late and miss it completely.

"Are you going to the party at the club tonight?" asks the event organiser in Spanish and, for want of the energy to say no, we smile and nod.

Then we go home to bed.

The fact is, we are past it. Going out  until late, even where 'late' remains the right side of one am, and even though we don't drink more than one alcoholic drink, (unless it's free), is beyond us. Especially when we have studied all day and spoken in Spanish all night. Well, theoretically anyway.

We will leave the partying to the youth. Or at least to those who can have a good lie in.
