Goodbye Vietnam, and thank you for playing. Here are your top ten most memorable moments.
1) Standing under the Elephant Falls, breath snatched away by the force of the water.
2) Conversations with O and P, and that final evening
3) Walking through the patchwork fields and sliding down banks of red mud with H as he tells us about farming techniques on the mountain sides of Dalat.
4) Turning cartwheels as the sand whips our skin raw on the sand dunes of Moi Ne.
5) Heartbreaking as it was, the War Remnants Museum and the Cu Chi Tunnels, listening to Mr Binh tell us that the enemy was unrecognisable and that the war stole his soul.
6) Realising suddenly that we have actually learned something about yoga, in the airy calm of the top floor of the yoga sanctuary, while roads, horns, cockerals and exhaust fumes rage outside.
7) Cruising round the mountain paths if Dalat on the back of a motorbike.
8) Cruising round the windy green tunnels of the Mekong Delta in a tiny wooden row boat.
9) The excited conversation rising to deafening volumes around the family table of our homestay in Dalat.
10) Being the only woman in the peanut shell strewn Bia Hoi, and getting an impromptu hug from one of the ladies who serves us when I ask to use the toilet.
Put me on my death bed right now and I would spend most of my time snivelling and trying to get sympathy. In between, if you were silly enough to ask, I would probably recount my life in journeys. Student debt to solvency, single to happily married, starting points, turning points, aspirations. You know, the big stuff. I might not mention which particular diet fads worked or didn't work. I may not remember that mistake I made at work which was not significant but for which I spent nearly an entire week mentally crippling myself. I would definitely not care whether on Tuesday 24 August 2003, someone had remembered to put the bins out.
And yet on a daily basis approximately 90% of my energy is ploughed into just those issues and the bigger picture is....well, a bit over pixelated.
This is fine, I reason. And perfectly rational. What is important however is not to let stuff I won't remember prevent me from finding the time to create the memories I will cherish.
And so....operation no regrets. Beginning with a travelling adventure. Eleven months, eleven counties, two backpacks, myself, my husband and the odd mosquito along for the ride.
